TRAVELING HERE

East Burke is not exactly the MOST convenient wedding destination you've probably ever considered, but there are some relatively easy airport options if you need to fly to see us. If you're driving, EB is not close to a major city or airport, but it is at least very direct from points south.

Airports: The easiest airport would be Manchester, NH (MHT). From Manchester, East Burke is a straight shot on Interstate 93 - about 2.5 hours. The drive brings you through beautiful Franconia Notch and we recommend it! Manchester has Southwest flights that are usually pretty inexpensive.

Other airport options would be:
  • Burlington, VT (BTV) which is a shorter distance "as the crow flies" but actually takes a bit longer because driving to East Burke is mostly on a one-lane road. Burlington has Jetblue flights that primarily connect through New York City.
  • Boston (Logan International). Once you're on 93 North from Boston, you basically just set the cruise control and point the wheels due north to get to our house. Boston is a bit further and we only really find it less expensive for international flights.  But there is also a really easy bus that runs from the airport to Franconia, NH or Littleton, NH, about 35 minutes south of where we live.
  • Montreal, Quebec is about the same distance as Manchester (2.5 hours) but Montreal traffic can be legendary. However, if you happen to be flying from Canada, it would save you from having to purchase an international ticket! Don't forget your passport!
Other Public Transportation: There are buses north from Boston and Manchester to Franconia (45 minutes from East Burke) and Littleton (35 minutes). There is a train (The Vermonter) from Washington DC and from New York City that heads to Burlington. Unfortunately, either option would still require you to probably rent a car or arrange for a pickup in order to travel the last bit. (Or you could pack a bike and take a beautiful 30 mile bike ride.)  Mostly I included all this so I could title the post "Planes, Trains and Automobiles"

Driving to East Burke is simple!

From points south (Boston, Manchester, Concord, Worcester), get to I-93 North and enjoy the lovely state of New Hampshire. Continue North until 93 ends, and merge onto I-91 towards St. Johnsbury, Vermont. Take Exit 23 in Lyndonville, then follow US-5 North to VT-114 North to East Burke. Don't blink when you get to East Burke, because you'll miss it! Turn right at the end of town toward Burke Mountain and follow Mountain Road about 2 miles up until you see Burke Mountain Academy on your right.

From the West (Burlington), Follow I-89 South to Montpelier, the follow US-2 to St. Johnsbury. In St Johnsbury, get on I-91 North, then take Exit 23 and follow US-5 North to VT-114 North to East Burke.  Then take the right turn onto Mountain Rd. towards Burke Mountain, and go all the way up until you see Burke Mountain Academy on your right.

Please email us if you might need to get picked up somewhere!  There are people coming from all over and there's a good chance we can get you a ride somewhere!

DINING EN ROUTE:
Since a number of people will be driving up after work on Friday, we thought we might let you know some good places to stop for dinner on your way.

Coming up I-91:
Brattleboro, Exit 2 in VT, has the Vermont Country Deli.  You'll have to eat in the car, but trust us, it's worth it.  Take Exit 2 and go about 100 feet on Rte. 9 West.  It's on your left, just before the gas station.

West Lebanon and Lebanon (Exits 20 and 18, respectively, off I-89 S) have lots of options, just a few minutes from I-91.  Try Lui Lui in West Lebanon for great Italian-style family dining.  Take Exit 20 off I-89 S, go left, then look for it on the right near the Powerhouse Mall.

Three Tomatoes Trattoria in Lebanon is a slightly more upscale Italian experience, well worth a visit if you haven't been.  Take Exit 18 of I-89 S and go right.  Take a lap around the green in Lebanon proper and you can't miss it, right next to Mascoma Savings Bank.

Take Exit 13 of I-91 N for Hanover, and you've got all the amenities that come with a nice rural-ish college town.  Anything on Main St. is good - Molly's Balloon, the Canoe Club, Ramunto's, the Chinese/Japanese place, etc.  You can't miss.  Stay out of frat row, though.

North of Hanover is a bit of a no-man's land.  There's the P&C truck stop in Wells River for some classic diner-trucker food, and really the next stop is St. Johnsbury.  Check out our dining section for more information on that.

Coming up I-93:
Manchester has the Red Arrow Diner, just off Elm St.

Concord has Panera off Exit 14 (go down Fort Eddy Rd., it's just past Hannaford on your left).

At Exit 19, just south of Tilton, there's the Dipsy Doodle Dairy Bar, home to lobster rolls, fried clams, burgers, hot dogs, ice cream, etc. (Take Exit 19, then head north on NH-132 for a few hundred feet.  It's on your left.  Take NH-132 N to US-3 N to get back to I-93 North.)

Plymouth, at Exit 25 has lots of great options (college town).  The Common Man Inn on the north side of town (take US-3 N a little ways, it's on your right), and the Common Man Italian Farmhouse just south of town.  For the Farmhouse, take Exit and head south on US-3.  Once you think you must have gone too far, go a little further and it's on your left.

Lincoln, at Exit 32, has every restaurant you could ever want.  We recommend Gordi's Fish and Steakhouse, on the right hand side as you head up the Kanc' (NH-112) out of town.  See if you can spot an old photo of Eddie Damon on the wall.

Franconia, Exit 38, has the Dutch Treat and the Village House, both great.  The 'Treat is a classic local spot with a fun atmosphere and a great bar.  Lots of locals and bikers, usually all super friendly.  The Village House is just south of Franconia on NH-18 and is owned by the same folks catering the rehearsal dinner.  Great menu, really nice people.

Littleton, Exit 41, has a bunch of great restaurants on Main St.  We highly recommend Chang Thai, probably the best Thai food in the area, and of course you have to go to Chutter's - the world's longest candy counter - and gorge yourself.  Take a right off the highway, go up to Main St. and make a left to see it all.  Chutter's and Chang Thai are both on the left, just a few doors apart.
